This was
the first time I'd seen Heep and the longest UK tour they've played
in about 15 years. It proved to be a great night of classic Heep
songs . Why Gravesend? I was on a work
course in Reading for six weeks and the Gravesend
show fell on a Saturday rather than a week night which made it easier
to get to. This was the second night of the tour and though London
and Guildford a fortnight ;ater would have been easier to get to
they both coincided with Deep Purple shows. With hindsight I think
seeing Heep again would have been a smarter move than going to watch
Joe Lynn Turner ruin the legend that had been Deep Purple.
As an interesting aside Heep supported Purple three years later
in Germany after Ian Gillan returned and Blackmore had been replaced
by Joe Satriani.

Oh dear.
Never have I heard so many people say so many bad things about the
band after they've just spent an hour and three quarters watching
what used to be their favourite band. |

Vixen
were good fun to watch and their slick pop-rock songs went down
well with the partially filled hall. Having decent seats for most
nights meant I had a good view too (which if you know who Vixen
are you will understand). |

Deep Purple
with Joe Lynn Turner was a mistake and I think the band probably
realised that as soon as they stepped on stage in front of a crowd.
They certainly admitted it a year or so later when Gillan was asked
back. |

Four nights
were certainly more than enough for me, Turner having had a voice
suited for Rainbow songs but not Gillan classics. His line in banter
was pretty embarrasing too. Walking out of the venue this was my
lowest day as a Deep Purple fan. |

I think
Wolfstone were on the bill as well but we arrived too late to catch
them. I decided at this gig Runrig and I had diverged so much I'd
be giving them a miss in future. They played almost all the current
album except my favourite, and the only rock song, Hearthammer.
Unsurprisingly the show ended with Loch Lomond it being to our right
throughout the day. |
