My first
experience of a Runrig show (and the first time I actually heard
their music I think). At this point they were still much more folky
than a couple of years down the line and this was probably the busiest
gig I ever witnessed in Ritzy. So packed was it that I was lucky
enough to stand in the mixing desk area care of a mutual friend
of the sound mixer. |

My outstanding
of this show was the loud American guy a row or two behind me that
shouted "Cocaine2 at every opportunity - even after it had
been played! Shows how out of it he was. |

Well,
what can I say about my first Deep Purple experience? An extremely
wet couple of days bookended the Purple performance and to say I
was exhausted by the end would be an understatement. Would I have
missed the day because of that. No way. Most of the bands had their
detractors, some many more than others (Meat Loaf), but I enjoyed
pretty much all of them - the final three especially. |

Queuing
early for some autographs I was dragged in to my first attempt at
roadie work, helping Dumpy unload his gear. For my trouble the guys
bought me a pint or two in the pub across the road between soundcheck
and set so I was rather merry by show time. Hawkwind were on the
Chronicle of the Black Sword tour but Ritzy being a little club
with a stage to match there was no way any of the normal stageshow
was going to fit in. Because of the choreography between music and
stageshow some tracks were dropped and replaced by older numbers
for probably the only show of the tour. |

Another
three band bill and this time I knew a little more about all the
bands involved. Statetrooper featured ex-MSG vocalist Gary
Barden. Also involved were most of Wildfire. They played material
from their eponymous album (though it didn't come out until a year
later) plus a couple of MSG songs. Most of the audience probably
didn't take too much notice (as is usually the case) of the support
bands but I enjoyed their slightly bluesy rock. The band are launching
a website as that 'Statetrooper' album is out on CD now: statetrooper.co.uk
